How Dental Implants In Los Angeles Can Save Your Beautiful SmileDecember 5, 2017
A beautiful smile – it’s something each and every one of us would like.
This is why we do our best to care for our teeth – brushing, flossing, and going to the dentist twice a year.
It’s also why the cosmetic dental product industry is booming.
The idea you can improve your smile with over-the-counter bleaching and straightening products is very appealing. They’re affordable and numerous people have success with them.
But some people have issues which can’t be treated with over-the-counter products. People with severe dental decay or people who have cracked, chipped, broken, or even missing teeth.
Is it possible for these people to have a beautiful smile?
Absolutely – especially with in-office dental procedures like dental bonding and the fabrication and placement of dental implants.
What Are Dental Implants and How Do They Work?
To understand how a dentist can save your beautiful smile, the first thing we need to do is find out what implants are and how they work.
A dental implant is made up of three components.
- The implant – This is a sturdy metal post which is placed into the jaw bone. It acts as the root of the tooth, a stabilizing force for the rest of the implant components.
- The abutment – Once a person has had an implant placed, they wait for it to heal for a few months. Afterwards, an implant dentist will expose the top part of the implant and place what’s known as an abutment. The abutment is the link between the implant and the crown – in other words, the root and the visible tooth.
- The implant crown – This component looks and functions like a normal tooth. It is fabricated to fit onto the implant abutment. Once the crown has been checked for proper fit and function, it is cemented or screwed onto the abutment.
To get an implant, the patient needs to make at least several appointments.
If the patient is already missing a tooth, the first appointment is for implant surgery. If the tooth is still present, we will remove the tooth and place the implant – as long as there’s no infection or another procedure (like a bone graft) isn’t needed.
The next appointment is the implant crown impression appointment. The patient comes into our office and we expose the top of the implant, place an abutment, and then take an impression.
The impression is sent to a dental lab to fabricate a beautiful custom crown.
Finally, the patient will come in for the crown delivery. We try the crown on – making sure the fit is nice and snug. Then, we check the contacts, making sure the patient can floss easily. And finally, we check the bite.
If the crown is too high, the patient could end up damaging the crown or adjacent teeth. If the crown is too short, the tooth opposite it could end up shifting to meet the crown.
This puts the real tooth in danger of fracture. It can cause TMJ symptoms (like chronic headaches) or put the patient at risk for gum disease or decay.
When we have the perfect fit, we cement the crown onto the abutment and the patient is good to go.
How Dental Implants Can Be Used in Conjunction with Other Cosmetic Treatments
One of the great things about dental implants is they can be used along with other cosmetic dental procedures.
We can brighten the rest of your teeth with professional whitening treatments to match your new implant.
We can also replace old silver or dingy white fillings with the latest white composite filling materials.
And if you want to go a step further, we can improve the look of any cracked, chipped, discolored, or crooked front teeth with dental veneers.
The possibilities are endless.
Afraid You Can’t Afford Dental Implants? Think Again!
In the past, getting a dental implant was something only the rich or famous could afford. These days, though, more and more people are able to get implants.
Not only are implant costs going down a bit, insurance companies are more likely to cover this type of dental treatment – something they wouldn’t do for a very long time.
If you have lost a tooth or are scheduled for an extraction, we hope you will be comforted by the fact we can protect your beautiful smile by means of a dental implant.
