School is in! Make sure your smile doesn’t get played out.
Everyone is concerned with putting their best foot forward when classes start this month. If you go to year-round school, then you can either disregard this information or just practice it throughout the school year and position yourself ahead of your peers.
A part of looking your best is maintaining a bright, shiny smile to introduce yourself to the world with. Those all day school sessions can have a way of impeding your pearly white practices, so here are some tips for staying on top of your oral health on the go and in the classroom.
Before you start that first day of school, make sure you schedule a visit at LA Dental Town for a checkup. This should be done twice annually to stay on top of keeping your teeth clean and healthy. Learn how to protect your teeth throughout the year and voice any of your questions and concerns to your dentist or your dental hygienist. They’ll be happy to impart their worldly wisdom upon you.
Brushing and flossing twice daily is the most important part of your oral health. Cultivating these good habits now will help them stay with you for a lifetime. You can also stash a travel or disposable toothbrush in your backpack (are you a one shoulder strap or two shoulder strap kind of kid?) for brushing after lunch and nutrition break. Brushing after every meal is on the next level, overachiever’s curriculum.
Practicing good nutrition is of paramount importance for your teeth. Studies show that only one in five children get their full servings of fruit and veggies per day. So instead of packing cup cakes, grab some sugar snap peas and some carrots, maybe an apple or two. Eat plenty of nuts (particularly walnuts and almonds) and be sure that you’re meeting or exceeding your daily recommended calcium intake. Eat food that activates your brain. Your report card and your dentist will thank you for your efforts.
If you’re active in the extracurricular, then make sure you snack before practice. Don’t burn yourself out. Drink lots of water. Eat clean and healthy and you’ll perform like a well-oiled machine. Also, be sure to wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth. You don’t want to take a tough elbow to the mouth while grabbing a rebound off the backboard and end up back in our office needing an implant.
So now you’re ready to hit the halls with confidence. Impress that high school crush you haven’t seen all summer. If you feel like your smile isn’t exactly up to par, then make sure you schedule your routine cleaning with LA Dental Town before class is in!
