What Should You Look For When Choosing a Pediatric Dentist?December 8, 2016
At LA Dental Town we know how crucial of a choice it is when choosing the dentist who will be taking care of your children. This is a person who is going to be working closely with your kids for years to come. Not only do you want a pediatric dentist who is going to have a good manner and rapport with children, but you’re also going to want a dentist who has the interest and ability to educate your kids in order to give them the tools they need to live a life of optimum dental health for the rest of their days.
Unfortunately, many dental offices advertise themselves as “family friendly” dental clinics, or even pediatric dental clinics, but that does not necessarily mean that they have a pediatric dentist. A true pediatric dentist has a specialized degree and a special desire to work with kids. Make sure to find out if your dental clinic has a pediatric dentist.
Once you’re in the office, it might be beneficial to take a look around and make a quick assessment of your surroundings. Go through this quick mental checklist to make sure that you and your kids are in the right place.
1. Make sure that the atmosphere and ambiance is suited for children. Go beyond taking a look to see if there are toys and coloring books in the waiting room. The entire office should be designed to make children comfortable. The main areas should be child-proofed, that way you don’t have to keep the Kung-fu grip on the little ones at every moment.
2. Make sure that your pediatric dentist has child-sized supplies. Kids have smaller mouths than adults, after all. Make sure your pediatric dentist isn’t cutting corners by using “one size fits all” equipment.
3. Can your dentist speak to children? A good pediatric dentist knows how to reach kids and has the innate ability to speak to them on their own level, in order to educate. Each kid is different, so an especially talented pediatric dentist will be able to improvise and tailor his/her approach to each individual child.
4. Patience, patience, patience. Children like to feel understood and appreciated. You don’t want a pediatric dentist who is going to lord over your kids like some tyrant. You want somebody who is interested in joining your team, setting up you and your kids for a lifetime of good oral health.
